What is a Fen Tiger

The Fens were, in the past, a hostile and hard place to live. The locals had to adapt to many different skills in order to make the surrounding land work for them.

A Fen Tiger was someone who embraced life in the Fens and was self sufficient – turning their hands to many different skills in order to find the materials and food they needed. Many mysterious tales were made up about these people who were quite often solitary figures – many knew the ancient crafts of herbalism and therefore were labelled as witches. Outsiders would conjure up all manner of images of these quiet, resourceful people. But more often than not – they were honest, down to earth people who turned their hands to many skills such as Eel fishing, wildfowling, willow coppicing, weaving and shepherding. Fen Tigers still exist today carrying on the ancient crafts that go back generations.
