Fenland Alchemist Garden
Designers: Stephen Hall & Jane Besser
Nestled deep in the heart of the Fens, on the edge of a dyke lives Fen Ben. His garden is a reflection of his eccentric soul and where he strives to live a solitary life… He is well known to the locals who are used to the strange smells and sounds coming from his dwelling as he practices the ancient art of alchemy.
This theatrical garden is a light hearted look at the life of a traditional Fen Tiger who practices the ancient art of alchemy. The Fens are steeped in folklore and tales of witches and alchemists and this garden aims to feed the myths and Fenland stereotypes.
Using only reclaimed, discarded or found materials, this garden also highlights the importance of recycling and sustainability in today’s gardens.
The eclectic planting theme includes species which have been used throughout the ages for alchemic purposes – a process known as ‘The Lesser Circulation’ – this mix includes medicinal and edible plants and the inclusion of native and wild plants with cultivars from the same genus to demonstrate the horticulturist’s fascination with another form of alchemy. The ability to transform and evolve plants – their endless quest for the perfect cultivar!
This garden also hope s to inspire gardeners to include more native species in their own gardens.
